A root canal treatment saves a tooth whose inner nerve and blood supply, called the pulp, has become infected or inflamed. Many people delay it because they worry it will hurt. In fact, the treatment is done under local anaesthesia and is usually no more uncomfortable than a filling. What really hurts is leaving an infection untreated.
Here are seven signs that you may need a root canal.
1. Tooth pain that lingers
Pain that stays for a long time, keeps coming back, or wakes you at night is a common sign that the pulp is affected.
2. Sensitivity to hot or cold that does not go away
A short twinge is normal. Sensitivity that lasts long after you finish your drink or food can point to nerve damage.
3. Pain when chewing or touching the tooth
If biting down or tapping the tooth hurts, the infection may have reached the tissues around the root.
4. Swollen or tender gums
Swelling near a tooth, or a small bump on the gum that may release pus, is a sign of infection that needs attention.
5. A darkened tooth
A tooth that turns grey or darker can mean the pulp is damaged.
6. A cracked or chipped tooth
Cracks allow bacteria to reach the inside of the tooth, even if it does not hurt at first.
7. A deep cavity or a large old filling
Deep decay can reach the nerve over time.
What happens during treatment?
Your dentist numbs the area, removes the infected pulp, cleans and shapes the inside of the tooth, and then seals it. In many cases a crown is placed afterwards to protect the tooth and restore its strength. Mild soreness for a few days is normal.
Do not wait for the pain to get worse
